Constantine Vaporis's request has brought a flood of responses. Well, no
one can say H-Japan members are not helpful! I have forwarded all replies.
Although there is some duplication, many messages contain useful comments.
In addition, the number and variety of resources reperesented here is
substantial, and an awareness of these possible sources of information may
be useful by themselves.

No doubt there will be many responses to this.
The best single resource I know of is a web page created
by Charles Eicher, which gives links to the following newspapers:
Asahi Shimbun
The Yomiuri Shimbun
Mainichi Shimbun
Hokkaido Shimbun
Kobe Shimbun Home Page
Chunichi Shimbun
Kyoto Shimbun
Hokkoku Shimbun
Nishinippon Shimbun
Kumainichi Shimbun (Kumamoto Daily News)
Toyama Shimbun
Yamanashi Shimbun
The Japan Times
Chubu Weekly
He also has links to some magazines and news services:
Sankei-Live
JIJI Press
Canada Japan Business Journal
The Internet Scholar Magazine
Tokyo Kaliedoscoop
Tokyo Central Quarterly Home Page
Tokyo Weekender WWW
Japan Free Press
NIKKEI"X"
TOKYO Journal (requires Netscape 2.0)
Intersect Japan
Cyber YAMANASHI
Newsbytes Pacifica
I have not tried all of these, but from what I can tell, this
web page seems to stay up to date. And, he also provides links to various
other sources of Japan-related information, including Japanese-language
computing. His web page is at:
http://soli.inav.net/~ceicher/japan.html
Another good source of information is Taki Naruto's Home Page:
http://www.panix.com/~tn/japan.html
I hope this helps.

Not to blatantly plug my own site, but the U.S.-Japan Links resource pages
include a fairly good directory of major on-line newspapers at:

I am passing this on from info I have kept but have not yet tried.

Shinbun Web pages. All have both Japanese
and English pages.

Asahi Shinbun: http://www.asahi.com/

Headlines with links on the first
page. Viewer-friendly.

Mainichi Shinbun: http://www.mainichi.co.jp/

Yomiuri Shinbun: http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/

Must click several times to get to the news.
Not so viewer-friendly.

The CEAL homepage has links to a wide variety of Japanese resources
including Japanese and English language newspapers covering Japan. It also
has information on how to get your viewer to read Japanese. The URL is:

Both the Asahi Shinbum and the Yomiuri Daily have online versions in both
English and Japanese. Asahi is at http://www.asahi.com and Yomiuri is at

Hope this helps.

Below are all the URL's I know of for newspapers published in Japan; some
but not all of them include English pages. Note that Japanese pages may or
may not be readable, depending on your computer's operating system.

Asahi shinbun http://www.asahi.com
Japan Times http://shrine.cyber.ad.jp/~jtinter/home.html
Mainichi shinbun http://www.mainichi.co.jp
Sanyo shinbun http://www1.meshnet.or.jp/sanyo-np/
Sapporo Journal http://www.j-mac.co.jp/SJ/
Yomiuri shinbun http://www.yomiuri.co.jp

I was unable to connect to the Yomiuri site today, but I think this was due
to a temporary problem with the server. All the others seem to be working now.

The Asahi, Mainichi, and Yomiuri are all on the web. The Mainichi and
Yomiuri have the news both in English and Japanese but, though I haven't
checked recently, I believe the Asahi page is only available in Japanese.
To read the Japanese pages, you must have a Japanese capable browser (such
as Netscape Navigator) and a Japanese capable system (For example, Kanjitalk
or JLK for the Mac, Twinbridge, etc. for the IBM). If your computer isn't
equipped to handle Japanese, you can jump to the Shodouka
http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/u/kryee/shodouka.html) Launchpad to view Japanese
text. It's slow (all the Japanese characters have to be converted into
in-line graphics), but it'll get you there. Here are the URLs for the
newspapers:

Asahi Shinbun: http://www.asahi.com/main.html
Mainichi Shinbun: http://www.mainichi.co.jp/
Yomiuri Shinbun: http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/index.html

Hope this helps.
