YALE UNIV. The Dept of East Asian Languages & Literatures seeks
applications for the position of assistant prof of Japanese. The
appointment, beginning July 1, 1996, would be as assistant
professor for a 3-yr term, with the possibility of renewal.
Applicants must have PhD in hand by the time of appointment.
Native or near-native fluency in Japanese, a PhD in Japanese
language &/or literature, training in language pedagogy &
experience in language teaching are required. Knowledge of
Chinese or Korean is desirable. Duties will include the teaching
of upper-level courses in Japanese and in the appointee's area of
specialization, and coordination of all levels of language
instruction in Japanese, Chinese, & Korean. The deadline for

INDIANA UNIV, Bloomington. A search is underway to fill the new
post of full-time resident director for the East Asian Summer
Language Institute (EASLI). EASLI offers immersion training in
Chinese, Japanese, & Korean to about 120 students each year in
Bloomington. The new directorship is a 12-month position.
Responsibilities include supervising faculty, developing
curriculum, marketing, managing finances, fund-raising, and
coordinating between EASLI and other univ units. The position
also involves expansion of the institute's sponsorship of
research, publications, & conferences. The successful candidate
will have an excellent record in administration. The PhD &
teaching experience in E Asian languages or cultural studies are
preferred. The director will receive a 4-yr renewable contract
and will start work on Aug 1, 1996. Salary to be commensurate
with qualifications. Due to late posting, the original deadline

American Studies invites applications for a 1-year, full-time
lectureship in Japanese. Candidates must have an MA in a field
related to language teaching with native or near-native fluency
in Japanese. Familiarity with 2nd language acquisition theories,
language pedagogy, and knowledge of Japanese lang, culture &
society required and should also demonstrate ability to
communicate effectively with an ethnically & culturally diverse
campus community. Preference given to candidates who have PhD/EdD
in fields of 2nd language acquisition, foreign language
education, cross-cultural communication, applied linguistics,
&/or Japanese lit. Candidates with training & experience in
proficiency-oriented teaching preferred. Appointee will be
responsible for teaching core courses in Japanese (1st to 3rd yr)
&/or courses in Japanese linguistics or pedagogy in accordance
