Research at Hatfield House

Moderator's Note: For those of you who might contemplate doing research at Hatfield House, here is a summary of responses from MedTextL to the query I posted earlier.

From: "Stephen R. Reimer" <SREIMER@UALTAVM.BITNET> Subject: Hatfield House: summary of responses

For Francois Compton-Roberts, Dan Mosser, and anyone else who is interested, here is the summary of the information which I have been provided on the question of the Hatfield House manuscripts.

The librarian: Robin Harcourt Williams (described by one of my correspondents

                                        as a bit gruff but very professional;
                                        as "very helpful if you provide him
                                        with some advance notice of your
                                        visit" by another)

The address: Hatfield House

Hatfield, Herts. AL9 5NF

The telephone: let me know if you want the number: I expect that the Marquess

would not thank me for publicizing it over the network

The National Register of Archives, in Quality Court off Chancery Lane is the place to which to direct queries about just where archival materials currently reside (they share a building with the Historical Manuscripts Commission); they also have a well-stocked library of guides and catalogues and things, so make a good place to start on any such quest.

The Hatfield House manuscripts have also been microfilmed and the films left on deposit at the British Library where they may be consulted with permission from the Marquess's lawyers (whose name and address is available upon request from the folks at the British Library).

      Third Marquess of Salisbury_. (available at the National Register
      of Archives or Christ Church, Oxford)

in the United Kingdom_.
