Research at the Bodleian (x-Ficino)

Editor's Note: I thought this information on where to stay in Oxford and how to get access to the Bodleian might be of interest to our list.

I made the trip last summer--2 weeks in Oxford and 2 weeks in London (and 1 week touring Yorkshire). Christ Church College has clean, comfortable rooms with kitchen access available in the summer. Write to : The Steward, Liddell Buildings, Christ Church College, Oxford. (Having a kitchen helps a lot to keeps costs down). The Oxford Tube and City Link are the bus companies that go back and forth between Oxford and London at least on the hour, if not the half hour--a day return costs about 8 pounds, and the journey is comfortable and quick.

Do indeed get the most impressive letter of introduction that you can--I made the mistake of getting a run-of-mill letter from my director of graduate studies, which only earned me a second class "P" library pass (it's fine for printed books but won't give you access to anything rarer or more fragile). Get your dean or college president's office to run one off (the more gold seals the better).

The only problem with doing summer research in Oxford are the crowds of tourists. I don't begrudge them a visit to that beautiful city, but it does tend to clog up the roads and buildings.

I'd be happy to answer any specific questions, if you'd like to send to me privately.
