American Friends of the Institute of Historical Research

Almost all North Americans who have done historical research in England are familiar with and have greatly benefited from the welcome, resources, and facilities at the Institute of Historical Research in the Senate House of the University of London. But, like so many sections of the British university world today, the Institute has not of late received all the support needed to maintain and improve its library collections and modernize its research equipment and physical plant. To help raise funds to maintain the Institute's effectiveness as a research center, its supporters in the United States organized the AMERICAN FRIENDS OF THE INSTITUTE OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH. This association was incorporated in New York State in 1988 and the United States Internal Revenue Service permits contributions to the American Friends to be deductible from income on U.S. tax returns.

Persons who contribute forty dollars U.S. or more to the American Friends will receive free access to the Institute's library for up to twenty days a year; the newsletter prepared by the Institute for its Friends all over the world; and an invitation to the special annual lecture given in London in July. A report on the uses made of the money collected will be included in each year's American Friends' appeal. Funds raised by the American Friends in 1992 were granted to the Institute in 1993 for the purchase of two CD-ROM stations. These have now been installed in the England Room.

Those wishing to contribute to the support of the IHR should make out their checks to "American Friends of the IHR" and send them to our treasurer:
