I agree wholeheartedly with the cautionary advice tendered about
having students seeks alternatives to expecting to teach at a researc
institution after receiving a Ph.D. I know whereof I speak. I am often
stressed by the demands of teaching, research, and service at low pay. But
we are not operating a Ponzi scheme here. The rewards even at the middling
and lower levels are great. I am allowed to talk and write about what I
think is important much of the time. Many people do that when they are away
from their jobs, not when they are at them. I don't disagree with Dr. Moran
and others. But lets remember the attraction.
