I am writing a biography, Sarah Parker Remond: A Nineteenth Century African
American Female Doctor. I hope to document her life, work, and education in
Europe for the years 1859-94. I am currently interested in her life in
London England, 1859/66. I will be in London in November and would like to
focus this part of my research on Remond's quest for educational
opportunity in England, her efforts at a pre-medical education at Bedford
College for Women, London, and the kind of guidance provided her by early
London feminist. Some of the questions the biography will raise include:
what kind of progress was Remond able to make in the field of medicine as a
female, black, American, foreigner and what role did race and gender play,
in terms of opportunities and restrictions, in a "global" sense?

Any ideas on funding for a project like this? I look at my NEH Summer
Stipend application each day and sigh.
