On the question of County Records, how many people out there are
aware of the existence of County Sites and Monuments Records(SMR).
Every county in England, most in Wales and some in Scotland has an
SMR. These are records of the archaeological and historical sites in
any particular county. Virtually all are computerised, and are now
mostly involved in advising planning authorities on the
archaeological implications of planning applications. As someone who
works on one of these (the South Yorkshire SMR), I'd be willing to
put a longer note about SMRs (including adresses) to the list, if
there was sufficient interest.
Regards,
Jim.
