Dear Roy,
I have pretty much decided that the only way to deal with the inevitable
question about the job situation from prospective graduate students is to
look them in the eye and tell them "slim", and that they better look into
themselves and be sure they want to do a higher degree for the love of
the subject rather than remuneration. This does, however, have
consequences: many prefer to find someone who paints a rosier picture
rather than work with a purveyor of bleakness.
