I always tell a student who asks about graduate studies in history that he or
she should not see graduate school as a passport to a job. But if deep in
his inmost heart, he is convinced that his life will not be fulfilled in any
other profession, then he (or she) should go for it, understanding that the
job search may be long and difficult afterwards.
