I am working in this area, but in a later period (1780-1860), so many of my
references wouldn't be of much use to you. If you really become interested
in broadsides, you will likely find you need to do some archival work. In
terms of general history/criticism, you might look at Leslie Shepard, _The
Broadside Ballad: a study in origins and meaning_ (1962) and other titles;
Dianne Dugaw, _Warrior Women and Popular Ballads, 1650-1850_ (1989); Tom
Cheesman, _The Shocking Ballad Picture Show: German popular literature and
cultural history_ (1994); and Joy Wiltenbery, _Disorderly Women and Female
Power in the steet Literature of Early Modern England and Germany_ (1992).
These latter three writers have also written a number of useful articles.
