The History Department at Washington University in St Louis invites
applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in modern
Western/Central European history since 1789. Preferences are for
twentieth-century Germany and European social history, but candidates in
all other areas, with the exception of intellectual history, will be
considered seriously. A subfield in modern European history in addition
to the major area of specialization is highly desirable. Commitment to

social/cultural history of Europe. Research specialty in
Italian Renaissance history is preferred, but other applicants

History: Early Modern Europe. The Department of History at the
University of Washington invites applications for a position
in early modern European history, with a preferred additional
interest in comparative European expansion. The appointment,
subject to availability of funding, will be at the level of
tenure-track assistant professor, beginning September 1996.
Applicants should have the Ph.D. degree and be highly
qualified for undergraduate and graduate teaching and
independent research, as well as interdisciplinary work in the

The University of Auckland is seeking two Professors of History to
fill the established chairs in the Department of History:

One Chair in New Zealand History

One Chair in the History of one or more of the following fields:
Europe including the British Isles, the Americas, East Asia,
Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands excluding New Zealand. These
fields are those currently well supported by the library holdings of
the University and by the academic activities of the lecturing staff
of the Department of History.

Candidates should have a record of excellence in research and
teaching, capacity to offer academic leadership and some
administrative experience.

Successful candidates will be expected to undertake a normal teaching
load within the Department, including lecturing to undergraduates.

It is the policy of the Department of History that the Headship of
the Department be on a rotating basis. All professors of the
University may be required to serve as Head of Department, and while
doing so are relieved of some teaching duties. It is anticipated
that one of the two successful candidates will be appointed as the
Head for a three or five year term.

Commencing salary will be established within the range $NZ83,000-
$NZ103,000 per annum.

58) Position: Dir. of the Medieval Institute
Institution: U of Notre Dame
Location: Indiana

The University of Notre Dame announces a search for the
position of Director of the Medieval Institute, to succeed
John Van Engen who will retire as director, after ten years of
service, in August 1996. The Institute's director must be an
accomplished scholar (ordinarily a full professor) in a field
related to Medieval Studies, and will become a tenured member
of an appropriate department in the University. Beyond
continued work as teacher and scholar, the director, as
administrator, will oversee and coordinate University programs
in Medieval Studies. The director's responsibilities include
the graduate and undergraduate programs in Medieval Studies;
conferences, lectures, and seminars sponsored by the
Institute; the photographic and microfilm archives of the
Bibliotheca Ambrosiana; and a publication series.
