H-Net: Humanities OnLine, has created a new list, H-REVIEW,
to distribute all H-Net reviews of books, films, software,
exhibits, cd-roms and other scholarly and teaching resources.
These reviews are each commissioned by and first published on the
H-Net lists.

THE H-NET REVIEW PROJECT:
Fast, thorough, professional reviewing is one of the most
important breakthroughs made possible by the Internet. H-Net book
reviews are commissioned by the 140 specialists who edit the
topical H-Net lists; they in turn are advised by over 600
scholars on our international editorial boards. The reviewers
themselves are scholars who specialize in the field; unsolicited
reviews are not accepted. While H-Net relies on paid graduate
students to handle the mailing and forwarding of books, they do
NOT select the reviewers, nor do they choose which new books,
films, software, classic books, textbooks, compilations, museum
exhibits, cd-roms or other multimedia material will be reviewed.
Internet publication can greatly reduce the time scholars
spend waiting for serious reviews. While paper sources typically
take a year or two to move a review through their backlog, H-Net
distributes as soon as the reviewer finishes. Our subscriptions
are free, and unhindered by typesetting, printing or mailing
costs, H-Net does not impose arbitrary length limitations. Our
reviews will be as long as the reviewer needs to do a thorough
job. (They average about 2,000 words, in contrast to the 500-700
word limit usually imposed.)
For important works H-Net will arrange simultaneous reviews
by several reviewers--in effect, an online conference session on
important new works. H-Net reviews can facilitate interactive
dialogue. Traditionally, authors rarely were given the
opportunity to engage their reviewers in a public forum. On
H-Net, however, authors are encouraged to respond to reviews and
discuss their work with H-Net subscribers. (All discussions on
H-Net lists are moderated by the editors, and flames are not
allowed.)
Our reviews are copyright by H-Net, but we encourage the
widest possible dissemination of them, free, in academic
environments. The logs of H-REVIEW will contain the complete
text of all H-Net reviews, and the logs can be searched
automatically for any key word. The logs will also be available
on our gopher and WWW sites. We expect to publish about 1,000
reviews in the next year. The 50 operating H-Net lists serve over
30,000 scholars from 61 countries, representing history and
practically every humanities discipline and field.
