On the subject of e-mail access while in London . . .
You may be able to get an individual membership to the Institute of
Historical Research, located in Senate House at the University of London
(just in back of the British Museum). You can get an account on their
computer network for sending e-mail, and they have computers there to use,
as well as (I believe) dial-in access.
I don't know about commercial services, but I did notice that the big
Dillon's on Gower Street is now offering computer terminals for rent, which
are connected to the internet.
There are lots of computer stores along Tottenham Court Road that can sell
you the proper cables, etc.
Good luck!
