The Contemporary Medical Archives Centre at the Wellcome Institute, and the
Public Record Office have been surveying hospital
records. Write to the Archivist, CMAC, Wellcome Institute for the
History of Medicine, 183 Euston Road, London NW1 2BP. The Archives
Dept of Birmingham Reference Library, Chamberlain Square, Birmingham
B3 3HQ, is also surveying its local hospital records. The records
for the Birmingham Hospital go back to the C18, but I don't know
about patient records. It would also be worth checking with Greater
Manchester County Record Office, 56 Marshall Street, New Cross,
Ancoats, Manchester M4 5FU.
My research query is as follows: has anyone come
across hospital/medical patient case records in industrial areas, i.e. in
areas where women worked in predominantly factory employment? I would also
appreciate any information concerning infirmaries attached to factories
or records from workhouse infirmaries. Any suggestions regarding
resources on working women's health in the early Victorian period would
be welcome.
