The Neil J. O'Brien Triennial Symposium in Medieval Studies
THE BODY OF CHRIST IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES
Rice University
November 10 & 11
1995
On behalf of the Medieval Studies Workshop at Rice University, I would
like to welcome you to the first Neil J. O'Brien Symposium in Medieval
Studies. The goal of this triennial symposium, endowed by a generous
gift from Mr. O'Brien '54, is to create an interdisciplinary forum in
which to address broad themes in medieval culture.
The theme this year is "The Body of Christ in the Late Middle
Ages," a burgeoning field that has of late produced research on topics as
diverse as eucharistic devotion, women's spirituality, mysticism, ritual
violence, and Jewish-Christian relations. The following program attempts
to do justice to that richness. Art history, history, Judaic studies,
literary criticism, musicology, and religious studies - all are represented.
The symposium also seeks to introduce Rice students, alumni, and
faculty, as well as the broader Houston community, to scholars whose
research seems particularly innovative. To that end all presentations
are of "plenary" length (approximately 50 minutes), and each allows 20
minutes for questions from the audience.
The conference is free and open to the public, and my colleagues
and I very much hope that you will be able to join us.
David Nirenberg
