There are two helpful booklets on these complex questions: John McCusker's
*How Much Is That in Real Money?* (1992), put out by the American Antiquarian
Society (though with some material on British wages and prices) and Lionel
Munby's *How Much Is That Worth?* (1989), published by the British Association
for Local History. Both are useful guides, especially for explaining to
students why you can't simply use multiplication to arrive at "present-day
equivalents" of past incomes.
