There are lots of things to look at. You might start with Thad Tate and
David L. Ammerman, eds, The Chesapeake in the Seventeenth Century
(Chapel Hill, 1979), which includes a number of relevant essays and
Russel R. Menard, "From Servants to Slaves: The Transformation of the
Chesapeake Labor System," Southern Studies 16 (1977): 355-90. The
bibliography in McCusker and Menard's The Economy of British America,
1607-1789 (Chapel Hill & London, 1991), lists at least twenty articles that
you might find helpful.
