Besides the fine suggestions you've already received, you might consider
Margaret Ferguson et al, Rewriting the Renaissance, for gender issues. To
focus on a particular family, Kate Simon's Renaissance Tapestry traces the
Gonzaga of Mantua. You can then incorporate the work of those they patronized
over the years...Mantegna, Rubens, Monteverdi, etc.
