I received such excellent advice about my Reformation class last Spring,
that I would like to benefit further from the list.
First, I am teaching a class on the Renaissance in a 3-week
session in January. The class meets for 3 hours in the morning for five
days a week. Does anyone know of good text books, problem books, or
anthologies? Has anyone used More's Utopia, or Machiavelli's The Prince,
or Cellini's Autobiography? If so, how did they work? Are there good
texts on Women in the Renaissance?
Second, next spring I am teaching a class called Modern
Imperialism. According to the catalog, this class is meant to cover the
rise of European empires from ca. 1492 to around 1850. (Another class
covers the downfall of the empires from the late 19th century on.) I am
clueless about how to organize or find books for such a course. I know
quite a bit about the British Empire, but much less on the others. Any
suggestions?
I apologize if these questions are not strictly on British
history. And if any of you would like a list of the books I used in my
class, please write privately and I will reply. Thanks in advance for
your help.
