With the easy availability of videos commercially and in library audio-visual
centers, students can do a film assignment outside the classroom. Giving them
several suggestions to choose from means that the class can discuss a variety
of techniques, styles, performances, etc. It can make for a very lively and
constructive session! If you prefer, you can put a movie on reserve in the
campus library and all can see the same film. Comparison of genre, such
as Martin Guerre in text and on film, can also be useful. Natalie Davis
has an article on "truth-telling" in historical films that my students have
found very stimulating. Think of a film assignment as a supplement to rather
than a substitute for what you do in class.
