I recently encountered a short, chapter-length account of evolution
(mostly on Charles Darwin) which British historians such as myself
are unlikely to consult: Lois N. Magner, A HISTORY OF THE LIFE
SCIENCES, 2nd ed. (NY: Marcel Dekker, 1994). I learned about it from
a colleague in the history of science.
