Southern History. The University of Georgia Department of

Phinizy Spalding Distinguished Professorship in the History of
the American South. The University has established this
professorship to honor the memory of B. Phinizy Spalding, a
member of the History Department from 1966 until his death in
1994. The committee invites applications from scholars with

and Social Sciences. Indiana University of Pennsylvania
invites applications for a tenure track position in the
History Department at the Assistant Professor level to begin
the Fall Semester of 1996. Qualifications: Requirements
include dissertation or extensive coursework in European
History, 1300-1700, with successful dissertation defense
before September 1996. Special attention will be given to
candidates with expertise in topics, regions or methodologies
we do not already emphasize. Applicants must provide evidence
of achievement or potential in both teaching and scholarship.
Duties: Candidates should be prepared to teach undergraduate
and graduate courses in their specialties and sections of a
one semester liberal studies course on Western Civilization in
its world context since 1700. this position involves a twelve
hour teaching load but no more than three (and more commonly

65) Position: HUNTINGTON FELLOWSHIPS
Institution: The Huntington

The Huntington is an independent research center with
holdings in British and American history, literature, art
history, the history of science, and photography. The Library
collections range chronologically from the ninth to the twentieth
centuries, and include a half million rare books and ephemera and
3.4 million manuscripts, supported by half million reference
works. The photography collection has over 400,000 images.
Within the general fields listed above there are many areas of
special strength, including: Medieval studies, Western America,
Colonial America, British drama, the Renaissance, California, the
American Civil War and literary manuscripts of the 19th and 20th
centuries. The Art Galleries contain a notable collection of
British and American paintings, watercolors, fine prints,
photographs and an art reference library. The Botanical Division
library houses a broad collection of reference works on botany,
horticulture, and gardening.

The Huntington will award to scholars about one hundred
fellowships for the academic year 1996-1997. These fellowships
derive from a variety of funding sources and have different
terms. They are all for study while in residence at the
Huntington.

Huntington Fellowships are awarded for one to five months
and carry monthly stipends of $1,800.

W.M. Keck Foundation Fellowships for Young Scholars are
intended to support the research necessary to complete a
dissertation or to begin a new project. They may be held for one
to three months and carry stipends of $2,300 per month.

National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships offer
stipends of up to $30,000 for four to twelve months in residence.
Applicants must be established scholars at the post-doctoral
level or its equivalent, pursuing scholarship in a field
appropriate to the Huntington's collections. Preference will be
given to scholars who have not held major awards in the three
years preceding the year of this award. Applicants who are not
U.S. citizens must have resided in the U.S. for at least three
years.

Barbara Thom Post-Doctoral Fellowship is designed to support
a non-tenured faculty member while revising a manuscript for
publication. The fellowship carries a stipend of $25,000.
Preference will be given to scholars who are four or five years
beyond the Ph.D. Applicants must be pursuing scholarship in a
field appropriate to the Huntington's collections and must be in
residence during the fellowship.

British Academy Exchange Fellowship is a program whereby the
Huntington nominates to the British Academy six scholars who are
pursuing research in Great Britain in history or literature. The
award, made by the British Academy, is for one month and the
stipend is 900 pounds. Applicants must already have the Ph.D.

TO APPLY:

Submit a brief (2 or 3 pages) but complete description of your
project, specifying the materials you plan to consult at the
Huntington. Indicate your progress to date as well as the amount
of time required at the Huntington. The description will be
considered by a panel of scholars from a variety of humanities
disciplines, so should by written for non-specialists. Please
enclose a curriculum vita. Three referees should send letters
directly to the Fellowship Awards Committee by the application
deadline. It is the applicant's responsibility to supply a
description of the project to the referees.
