The movie about a group of people fleeing the plague may be "Flesh &
Blood". It came out in 1985 & starred Rutger Hauer & was director Paul
Verhoeven's first English language film. It was a very dark piece, containing
much violence & graphic sex. It was also known as "The Rose & the Sword". I
remember this film mostly because I remember how disturbed I was after seeing
it. A better film, to my mind, would be "Stealing Heaven". It's a 1988
dramatization of the story of Abelard & Heloise from the novel by Marian Meade.
While steamy & sensational (considering the truth of the real story, how could
it not be?) it showed a decent view of life in the theocracy of 12th century
France. Both of these are on video. Hope this helps.
