Regarding Chris Harrison's query, I would agree with Caroline Litzenberger
that the lack of reference to Christ as "redeemer" is not unusual or even
especially significant. My own work in Essex wills reveals that the
phrasing of the preamble is largely formulaic and may reflect the views
of the scribe (who may have composed the preamble before arriving at the
death-bed) rather than those of the soon-to-be-deceased. The reference
to "Brother John" in the body of the will is, however, interesting.
Could you please supply us with more details?
