In Betty Smith's _A Tree Grows in Brooklyn_, which was written, I think, in
the '40s but takes place before World War I, John Nolan, born in Ireland,
is laid out in his family's front room after his death.

Not a scholarly source, but I've been told it's accurate in its social
details.
