COMPUTING FOR THE SOCIAL SCIENCES (CSS'96)
Seventh Annual Meeting of the Social Science Computing Association
May 13-15, 1996
University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN 55455

FINAL CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

THEME:
The principal theme of CSS'96 is "Assessing the Promise of Advanced
Technology and Information Infrastructures." The conference focuses upon
the interface between computing and the social sciences. This year the
focus is upon methods for assessing the quality and impacts of relevant
technology, especially networks and other means of exchanging, linking,
and communicating. Some sessions may serve as forums for policy debates.

TOPICS OF INTEREST:
The program committee is open to any proposed presentations on the
conference theme; computing tools for social science research or
instruction; personal, organizational, or social issues relevant to the
use of information technology in the social sciences. Some possible
session topics are:

[] Internet-based social surveys, online focus groups, etc.
[] Networking for data acquisition, e.g., CATI
[] Infrastructure analysis and requirements
[] Community and collaboration in the age of the Internet
[] Classrooms and cyberspace
[] High performance computing models
[] Simulation and related technologies
[] Large-scale data management, e.g., data mining and warehousing
[] Global and regional modeling, visualization & other graphic
methodologies
[] Artificial intelligence in organizations
[] Computing tools for qualitative research methods
[] Data transfer and related information tools
[] Ethics, equity, privacy, and other social issues

AUDIENCE:
Users and designers of computer-based systems for social science
research. Especially welcome are educators and students interested in the
links between the social sciences and computers.

CONFERENCE DETAILS:
There will be two and a half days of panels, paper sessions,
poster/project sessions and special speakers, preceded by a day of
tutorials or workshops. Awards of $200 will be given to the best student
and nonstudent papers of the conference.

HIGHLIGHTS:
The CSS'96 conference will meet just prior to the International
Association for Social Science Information Service and Technology
(IASSIST) Conference (May 15-17). IASSIST is an international
organization of professionals engaged in services related to the creation,
acquisition, processing, maintenance, distribution, preservation and use
of machine readable text and/or numeric social science data. The two
conferences will have combined sessions on Wednesday, May 15. A reduced
rate will be available for persons wishing to attend both conferences. For
further information about IASSIST'96, contact: Wendy Treadwell, Program
Co-Chair <wendy@mrdc.lib.umn.edu> or http://www.ssc.upenn.edu/iassist96/

INVITATIONAL WORKSHOPS:
Funding is being sought for two research workshops to be held during the
conference. Participants would receive an honorarium to cover travel
expenses and would be expected to prepare and distribute a paper prior to
the workshop. The topics will be on the use of social science theories
and methodologies to understand the Internet and related networks. Those
interested should submit a paper proposal to the conference by December
15, 1995 (see below).

PROPOSALS:
We are seeking proposals for papers, poster sessions, panel discussions,
hardware or software demonstrations, and workshop presentations. Each
proposal should be about one page and should be submitted by December 15,
1995 by email to Mary Drew <drew@iea.soc.umn.edu>, or by fax to
