Well, one obvious place to start is Thompson's "Class Struggle Without
Class" - which if I am not mistaken appeared in _Social History_ (but I
am not at home so I don't have the reference handy.) Also all the essays
in _Albion's Fatal Tree_, by Thompson, Douglas Hay et al. (Note that
John Langbein has published a critique of this approach ("_Albion's_
Fatal Flaws") in _Past and Present_, c. 1984, that will define some of the
contours of the debate. I think Langbein is wrong - I've never managed to
figure out how anyone believes that "respectability" is not linked to class
- but it offers an
interesting perspective.
In the more recent work you might want to look at Deborah
Valenze's work in various places; also Leonore Davidoff and Catherine
Hall, _Family Fortunes_. Both these will engage with the class and
gender issues.
