I need to focus some research on the construction of class
in the 18th century and thought I'd tap the collective braintrust
for suggestions about what to read first. At present I'm awash
in possibilities, given the vastness of the subject--most of my
previous work in this area has centered on the 1780s and 1790s
(and I work in the 19th century by trade), so I'm familiar with
some of the older works that deal with that period (Thompson's
MAKING OF THE ENGLISH WORKING CLASS, Gwyn Williams' ARTISANS AND
SANS-CULOTTES, Cone's ENGLISH JACOBINS, for instance). Oh, and
I'm interested in literary and non-literary scholarship.
Any suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated. It
might be better to respond off-list, and I can compile the
results and ship them out individually if anyone's
interested--just drop me a note that you'd like to see the
results. Thanks again,
