I think Old Bob refers to Robert Green Ingersoll (1833-1899), the son of
a New York Congregational minister, who was a self-educated Illinois
lawyer, Civil War veteran, Republican politician and agnostic lecturer.
He dubbed James G. Blain the "Plumed Knight" in the 1876 election.
