All that you say Peter is very true. But for me the question is not
really whether England was a 'land without music' - it obviously wasn't -
but why for 200 years between 1695 say, and 1880 creative production
vis-a-vis the European musical canon was so deficient considering
England's wealth and power, and access to music, at that time. London was
virtually the world capital of European 'art' music throughout much of the
18th and and 19c. Why was there no impact upon that canon?
