I recently wrote a paper on Irish neutrality in WW II and have some suggestions
for sources. Secondary sources include:
Robert Fisk, *In Time of War*, Philadelphia: U of PA Press, 1983
John Bowman, *De Valera and the Ulster Question 1917-1973* Oxford,
Clarendon Preess, 1982
Paul Canning, *British Policy Towards Ireland 1921-1941* Oxford,
Clarendon Press, 1985
Carolle Carter, *The Shamrock and the Swastika* Palo Alto, Pacific Books,
1977
John Duggan, *Neutral Ireland and the Third Reich* Dublin: Gill &
MacMillan, 1985
Dermot Keogh, *Ireland and Europe 1919-1948* Dublin: Gill & MacMillan,
1988
Kevin Nowlan and T. Desmond Williams, *Ireland in the War Years and After*
Notre Dame U Press, 1970
I suggest you also look at dail and parliamentary debates, published
collections of historical documents (Alan O'Day and John Steeveenson, *Irish
Historical Documeents Sinceee 1800* and Arthur Mitchell and Padraig
O'Snodaigh, *Irish Political Documents 1916-1949*). In addition, you should
look at the collection of speeches of both de Valera and Churchill, and if
you have time you might do a survey of newspapers; there seems to have been
some debate within the press of the wisdom of de Valera's neutral policy, and
he certainly got a lot of heat from the British. I hope this helps; feel free
to e-mail me if you want to discuss this off-list.
