_The Impact of the English Civil War_, ed. John Morrill (Collins and Brown,
1991) is a good introduction to the political, religious and
importantly, because it is always omitted, the literary impact. There
are good chapters by Ian Gentles and Peter Thomas and there is a
glossary in each essay explaining key terms such as Independents
and Presbyterians (both in a religious and political sense). It
provides useful definitions of Agitators etc and chronicles the major
military events as well as the dates of negotiations between the king
and Parliament.
