Published Scottish Biographies?

Can anyone enlighten me on the subject of published biographies of
notable Scots? I seem to remember a few years ago (perhaps the early
1980s?) that a Dictionary of Scottish Biography was published. I
think Alan Bold, the poet, was the author. Am I right? Was it only
literary figures, or others as well?
All help gratfully appreciated and a pint to the promptest reply in
the pub of MY choice. ;-)
