**********DAVID BRUCE CENTRE INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM**********
'FREDERICK DOUGLASS IN BRITAIN - A LIBERATING SOJOURN: 1845-47
KEELE UNIVERSITY, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 1ST-3RD 1995
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Frederick Douglass's first trip to
Britain, the David Bruce Centre will host an International Colloquium
assessing the significance of the visit. As 1995 also marks 150 years since
the publication of Douglass's first autobiography and the 100th anniversary
of his death, it is appropriate for judgements about his importance to be
reviewed. The Colloqium will bring together scholars from both sides of the
Atlantic including Douglass's distinguished biographer, William McFeeley,
Abolitionist historian Richard Blackett, literary critic Anne Goodwyn-Jones
and British writer on slavery David Turley. Papers on such diverse topics as
Douglass and the gender politics of reform, his reaction to the Free Church
of Scotland and to the Chartists, the relationship of his visit to those of
other American Abolitionists and his interaction with British Unitarians,
will be delivered over a residential weekend at Keele. The conference
programme includes visits to the recently opened Slavery Gallery at the
National Maritime Museum, Liverpool and the Wedgewood Museum, Barlaston.
The cost of a full weekend is 100 pounds sterling with an unwaged rate of 80
pounds. Non-residential fees (including all meals) are 50 and 40 pounds
respectively. Daily rates, pro rata. Bedrooms with en suite facilities are
available for participants. They carry a supplement of 40 pounds.
Further information, including registration form and copy of the draft
programme, may be obtained from:
