St Patrick's Day

Dear all,
Tomorrow morning I am down to do my annual interview for the
local student newspaper on St Patrick's Day (as the only British
specialist on the faculty I am also the only game in town for them). One
question that always comes up that I do not know the answer to, is when
did it start being celebrated as a peculiarly Irish (and Catholic?) event?
As well, am I right in remembering that St Patrick's status as a genuine
saint has been challenged and that he is currently on "probation"? Not
that any of this matters as far as the festival is concerned, but I would
like to get it right.
