In 1597 Duarte Lopes' *Relatione del reame di Congo*
was translated into English (STC 16805). One of the
burdens of that work was to prove "that the blacke
colour which is in the skinnes of the Ethiopians and
Negroes &c. proceedeth not from the sunne." In 1600
Leo Africanus' *Della descrittione dell'Africa* was
translated (STC 15481). The translation of these
works would seem to indicate an English interest in
things African.
