On ideas of Africa (though not focussing on "men") in 16th
century England, you might want to look at Margo Hendricks and Patricia
Parker, _Women, "Race", and Writing in the Early Modern Period_. It
looks primarily at issues of literary representation, but those are, of
course relevant to this topic. This would be a good starting place,
leading to other sources and possibilities.
