H-MMEDIA = new H-Net list in Multimedia for Humanities
H-MMedia serves as a forum for learning about and discussing
the use of "multimedia" in teaching and research in the
humanities. Subscription is free, and subscribers will
automatically receive messages in their computer mailboxes.
Messages can be saved, discarded, copied, printed out, or relayed
to someone else. It is like a daily newsletter or an ongoing,
moderated "roundtable" discussion.
H-MMedia appears at a critical juncture in the evolution of
technology in higher education. It is designed for the growing
number of humanists who are starting to take advantage of new
products that allow for much greater use of multimedia for
teaching (in and out of the classroom) and research. In the last
couple of years scholars have started to experiment with CD/ROMs,
presentation software, scanners, laser disks, gophers, WWW and
the Internet. The pace to technological change shows no sign of
abating. Just down the track we can spot distance learning and
virtual reality.
H-MMedia is co-moderated by Paula Petrik of the University
of Maine (Petrik@maine.maine.edu) and Jack Reynolds of the
University of Texas at San Antonio (jreynold@lonestar.utsa.edu)
and James Wilson (wilsonjw@JMU.EDU) of James Madison University.
H-MMedia has an editorial board broadly representative of the
state of scholarship. It a member of the H-Net family of lists,
and has financial support from the National Endowment for the
Humanities.
H-MMEDIA will serve as a medium that will allow academics in
the humanities to keep pace with technological change. It will
commission reviews of hardware and software, and keep readers
apprised of informative articles in electronic and paper
publications. H-MMEDIA subscribers will receive timely notices of
workshops, calls for papers and grant opportunities.
H-MMEDIA will serve as a forum that will allow scattered
pioneers in the technology to meet, update each other on what
they are up to, exchange materials, and discuss the pedagogical
purposes of their endeavors. It is hoped that these exchanges
may lead the way to joint ventures and otherwise expedite the
development of computer aided instruction. The best items will be
included in our gopher and WWW site.
