FURTHER PARTICULARS
THE DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY
The Department of Anthropology and the Contemporary China Centre form part of
the Division of Society and Environment within the Research School of Pacific
and Asian Studies. With a small academic staff and a large number of
postgraduate research students, the Department is committed to an integrated
program of research and graduate teaching. The Department's staff and students
carry out intensive studies of the local cultures and societies of the region.
Research is generally developed from a comparative and an historical perspective
and is chiefly concerned with social change within the region.
The work of the Department is divided into a number of research groups or
clusters made up of staff, students and visitors. Presently there is a research
group on Indonesia that holds regular seminars focusing on Java, Bali, and
eastern Indonesia; a research group focusing on the Thai-Yunnan-Burma border
region which produces the Thai-Yunnan Project Newsletter; another research group
that is concerned with Papua New Guinea, particularly the Sepik, the Massim, and
Interior New Guinea. A new research cluster is being formed that will focus on
Northeast Asia. With its next appointment, in close cooperation with the
Contemporary China Centre, the Department hopes to continue developing the
research group whose focus is on the anthropology of China. The Department also
has a continuing interest in the comparative study of the Austronesian-speaking
populations. Current postgraduate research is mainly directed to Indonesia,
Thailand and Melanesia. However, there are individual students who are
presently doing research in Inner Mongolia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and the
Philippines. The Department produces the journal, Canberra Anthropology and has
its own publication series. The Department also has a small Ethnographic Film
Laboratory that produces ethnographic films and videos which are distributed by
the University.
THE CONTEMPORARY CHINA CENTRE
The Contemporary China Centre was established in 1970 as a research facility
concerned with scholarly social-science analysis of post-1949 China. The
Centre's main research emphasis relates to the Chinese economy, to China's
modern political and legal arenas, and to the social/anthropological
ramifications of political and economic change. All academic staff and students
at the Centre use Chinese-language sources in their work.
In combination with the research and publication activities of its own research
fellows and staff members, the Contemporary China Centre aims to provide a focus
for modern China studies both within the University and more broadly within
Australia. The Centre also organises regular seminar and discussion programs
with participants from other sections of the University, with scholars invited
from other Australian universities, and with specialists from the Australian
Government, which is centred in Canberra.
For documentary research, the library resources within Canberra generally are
excellent. Both the ANU Library and National Library, located across the lake
from the University some three kilometres by road, contain extensive collections
of Western-language materials on modern China. The ANU Library also contains
more than 150,000 Chinese-language periodicals and newspapers. The Library is
currently subscribing to 1,200 Chinese-language periodical serials. The
National Library contains 210,000 Chinese-language monographs, plus 5,100
different sets of Chinese-language periodicals and newspapers, of which 3,100
are current subscriptions.
In addition to its program of research and supervision, the Centre publishes The
Australian Journal of Chinese Affairs, a 200-page periodical issued twice
yearly, and a book series.
THE RESEARCH SCHOOL OF PACIFIC AND ASIAN STUDIES
The Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies is one of the four original
research schools which formed the Australian National University as it was
established in 1947; in 1960 these Schools became the Institute of Advanced
Studies and the then Canberra University College was brought into the University
as the School of General Studies. In 1980 the School of General Studies was
renamed The Faculties. The Institute is devoted to research and to graduate
training mainly at PhD and postdoctoral level. It consists of the Research
Schools of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Pacific and Asian
Studies, Information Science and Engineering, Physical Sciences and Engineering,
and Social Sciences; the John Curtin School of Medical Research; Mount Stromlo
and Siding Springs Observatories; the National Centre for Epidemiology and
Population Health; and also the School of Mathematical Sciences which has
Institute and Faculties components. Following a recommendation of the Committee
which reviewed the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies in December
1989, the RSPAS moved to a structure of four divisions from 1 January 1991. In
the case of three of these divisions, existing departments and centres remain,
but departments in the Division of Pacific and Asian History have been
disestablished. The North Australia Research Unit located in Darwin remains
outside the divisional structure. In 1994 a new Division of Archaeology and
Natural History was formed, combining the departments of Prehistory,
Biogeography and Geomorphology and the Quaternary Dating Research Centre.

ACADEMIC STAFF
In the RSPAS, there are about 115 academic staff; approximately two-thirds of
them hold non-tenured posts. The School continually reviews its research
priorities; academic staff positions are determined in the light of these
priorities.
GRADUATE STUDENTS
At present in the RSPAS about 165 students are enrolled in the PhD degree
course. Most of these are enrolled for the full-time course which takes from 3
to 4 years of research. In addition to PhD enrolments across the School, the
Department of International Relations, the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre
and the National Centre for Development Studies provide Graduate Diploma and
Master programs in which approximately 186 students are enrolled. The newly
offered MBA in Asia Program has 21 students. A University-wide Graduate School
to co-ordinate all graduate study in the University came into operation at the
beginning of 1991. Most postgraduate students in the Research School of Pacific
and Asian Studies are associated with one or more of the University-wide
Graduate School programs.
VISITING FELLOWS
The Research School has an active program of encouraging academics from other
institutions in Australia and overseas to come for periods of from a week to up
to a year as Visiting Fellows, to enable them to undertake full-time research,
in collaboration with particular members of a department, unit or centre.
In addition, the University encourages arrangements whereby academic staff of
other Australian universities may come to do full-time research here for periods
of 1 to 3 years.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
NOTE: (i) Details were correct at the time of printing but cannot be taken as
binding on any agreement entered into by the University.
