In an 18th century woman's will I am working on (with numerous codicils,
covering the period of 1764-1780) there are several references to her
stock holdings in what she refers to at one point as the "four per cent"
and the "three per cent behind the Bank," and another time as "the four
per cent Consols." Since I'm not an expert in 18th century British
finance, can someone who IS an expert unravel this for me and/or point me
in the direction of a readable source? My understanding is that consols
stood at 3 percent throughout the 18th century. Was there another kind of
consols at 4 percent, and if so, how was it different from the 3 percent?
Many thanks.
