H-Net Alert: NEH in trouble

The House Appropriations Subcommittee today June 20
restored NEH appropriation from $100 million to $150 million.
That's the good news.

The bad news is that Congressman Kolbe (R-Arizona) tried (and
failed) to mandate that 80% of NEH money should go to the state
humanities councils, and only 20% to the federal NEH. The
proportion now is 80% federal and 20% states.
--Kolbe plans to resubmit his plan to the full House
Appropriations Committee on Thursday.

Supporters of the humanities argue that there is a national
mission that NEH performs [like fellowships, PBS television
shows, support for museum exhibits, support for translations, and
indeed support for H-Net] that would be lost.
