CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT PROJECT IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES
The International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) and the American
Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) seek
applications from post-doctoral American scholars in the social sciences,
especially political science and policy studies,
to teach during academic year 1995-96 in a special project to develop
empirically-oriented teaching curricula and
research capacities at the following institutions:
Center for Public Affairs Studies, Budapest University of Economic
Sciences, Hungary
Institute of Sociology, Warsaw University, Poland
Faculty of Political Science, Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca,

The multi-year project to be inaugurated in 1995-96 will include, in
addition to the junior faculty positions, the following
programs:

Collaborative research awards for central Europeans
Distinguished consultancies for American faculty
Intensive seminars
Course development grants for central European faculty
Translation of texts and articles
Thesis research awards for central European students

The Positions. The Junior Faculty Teaching Positions will be for one
academic year (applications for one semester only will also be
considered) and are intended for post-doctoral scholars/junior faculty.
Instruction will be in English. The American scholars holding these
teaching positions will work under the supervision of one of the three
specified departments and will teach courses which reflect current
developments in university-level teaching and research in the
social sciences. Course instruction should offer new perspectives on
empirically-oriented teaching and research in these fields, including
interactive methods. The junior faculty will be expected to participate
actively in the development of courses, research projects, and other
programs related to the project. Additional information about the
expectations of each institution is available from the ACLS.
Salary and benefits will be at competitive U.S. academic levels. In
addition, awards will provide for overseas travel and
health insurance.
Qualifications. Applicants should have completed a Ph.D. in the social
sciences, especially political science or policy studies. Teaching
experience in policy studies will be especially valuable in most
positions. U.S. citizenship required. Knowledge of local languages and
prior experience in East European studies are not required.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION / COMMUNICATION
The School of Natural Resources and Environment, The
University of Michigan, is seeking to fill a full-time,
nine-month, tenure-track position in Environmental Education
/ Communication at the level of Assistant Professor, to be
filled by September 1996. Review of applications begins
September 5, 1995.
QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate must have a doctorate in the
social or natural sciences with demonstrated research
interest and ability in environmental education and
communication. A successful candidates research would focus
on knowledge-based interventions with respect to
environmental or resource issues. The acquisition, sharing,
effectiveness, or impact of resource/environmental
information would all be appropriate aspects of this area of
study. The settings for such research can include
individual, community, corporate, and/or organizational
contexts. Teaching as well as research excellence are
expected.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teach a minimum of three courses annually, including
an upper-level undergraduate course in environmental
education and/or communication, a Masters level
course dealing with cutting-edge issues in
environmental education or communication, and an
advanced graduate seminar in ones specialty.
2. Develop a strong conceptually-focused research
program. This research may be qualitative and/or
quantitative in nature but must lead to peer-reviewed
publications. The research program should be
supportive of ones teaching portfolio and the
Schools integrative, interdisciplinary approach to
environmental problem-solving.
3. Direct interdisciplinary graduate research;
participate in the academic counseling of graduate
and undergraduate students; and supervise doctoral
and masters students including integrative, group-
based masters projects.
4. Build cooperative ties with relevant University-wide
programs and departments involved with environmental
education and communication issues.
The School of Natural Resources and Environment is a
research-oriented professional school focusing on the
development of policies and management programs that promote
the conservation, protection, and sustained use of natural
resources, and on the training of practitioners and
researchers that will seek these ends. Faculty in the
School are diverse. The Schools programs are committed to
integrative, interdisciplinary problem-solving. It is
important for applicants to possess attitudes and interests
fostering excellence in both a specific area of
specialization and interdisciplinary activities in teaching

Duties/Responsibilities:
Processes circuit court records according to approved archival
standards by flat-filing, folding, identifying, and reboxing
records and labelling boxes. As needed, examines records and
creates indexing information for entry into databases.
Prepares processed records for reformatting. Examines records
to determine preservation needs and performs basic preservation
procedures as needed to include mending materials with heat-set
tissue, mylar encapsulation, preservation photocopying, and
preparation of materials for preservation microfilming.
Maintains appropriate control of record during processing;
moves materials to new locations, as needed, when processing is
completed; and reports new stack locations to appropriate
individuals.
Qualifications:
Prefer Masters degree in U. S. History, Library Science, or
related field or equivalent. Knowledge of Virginia History or
Government Records Preferred.
Other Information:
Twelve days annual leave, fifteen days sick leave, eleven paid
