Query: Heaven/Earth sep. by a river

Could anyone give me references for the Medieval symbolic idea,
prior to the 12th Century, that Heaven & Earth were separated by a river &
therefore the crossings i.e. bridges over rivers were sacred? We have the
Greeks & the River Styx, & the Celtic notion of crossing a river to the
Land of the Blest but I'm having trouble tracking this Medieval notion.
Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.
Chris.
