DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

Professor & Head of Department/Associate Professor/Assistant

The Department of History currently has twelve faculty members
teaching primarily in two different degree programmes: (1)
B.A. (Hons) in Arts and Social Sciences where the emphasis is
on Sino/Asian-Western history, and (2) B.Soc.Sci. (Hons) in
China Studies, a multidisciplinary course with a strong
history option.

One position will be available for September 1995. An
appointee at the Professor rank will be considered for the
position of Head of the Department.

The appointee should be a specialist in the history of China
since 1949 who has teaching and research interests in the area
of contemporary China. He/She will teach History of
Contemporary China, Foreign Relations of Modern China, and
specialized topic studies in the history of the Communist
movement in China and the PRC. He/She is also expected to
contribute to the teaching of one or more of the
methodological subjects: The Historical Tradition of the West,
Historical Theory and Practice, and Introduction to Chinese
Historiography.

Applicants should possess a relevant PhD degree and a second
area of competence in one of the following areas: Modern
European History, History of Hong Kong or Sino-Western
History. For position at Associate Professor or above, a
substantial record of scholarly research and publication, and
evidence of effective teaching are essential. For the
Assistant Professor position, demonstrable potential in these
areas is necessary.

Terms of Appointment

Salary Scales: (approximately US$1=HK$7.73)

Professor : HK$807,060 - $889,260 p.a. by 3
increments
Associate Professor : HK$641,580 - $861,900 p.a. by 8
increments (Scale A)
: HK$551,760 - $689,880 pa. by 5
increments (Scale B)
Assistant Professor : HK$412,980 - $524,040 p.a. by 4
increments plus possible progression to HK$689,880 p.a. by 6
increments

(Entry salary will be commensurate with qualifications &
experience)

Appointment will normally be made on fixed-term
gratuity-bearing contract of three-year duration with a
gratuity equal to 15% of the basic salary earned over the
contracted period payable upon successful completion of
contract. Generous benefits package includes annual leave,
medical & dental benefits, and children's education allowance.

2) Position: History
Institution: Southern Utah University
Location: Utah

History: Assistant Professor. Full-time, nine-month position.
(One year position with the possibility of becoming tenure
track.) Teach Western Civilization survey courses, Russian
history, Middle Ages and Renaissance and Reformation, and
course in British history every other year. Minimum
Qualifications: Ph.D. in history desired; excellence in
teaching stressed, as well as scholarship and service; ability
and willingness to adapt courses to current technology
applicable to discipline and possibly teach in distance
learning environment. Starting Date: September, 1995. Salary:
$26,000-27,500, depending on experience and training;
