I am not sure if this is quite what she had in mind, but Bill Rolston
of the University of Ulster did interesting work on political murals
in Northern Ireland. There is an article in the journal "Media, Culture
and Society" (1987) as well as a book called "Drawing Support" (by
Blackstaff Press in Belfast, I think), which examine the links between
political violence and popular culture. He has another publication called
"Politics and Painting" (a book), but I am not sure if this is a revised
edition of the "Drawing Support"book, or something different.
Even if these are not of immediate interest, you might still find it
interesting to take a look at them. THey contain many photographs of the
murals and are very interesting in their own right.
Best wishes with your research,
