retirements as a result of a retirement incentive and expects
to fill, starting in the Fall 1995 semester, approximately 190
tenure track vacancies. The District now invites applications

SALARY
The current salary range is $26,000 to $41,920 for new
employees, with a potential maximum of $51,600, for a 40-week
academic year, not including applicable position and degree
differentials. New employees to the District will be allocated
within the salary range according to previous training and
experience. Employee benefits include 25 paid
holidays/vacation days annually, district-paid
medical/hospital, dental and vision care plans and a $40,000
group life insurance policy. Regular faculty who retire alter
a vesting period have lifetime medical coverage if Medicare is
maintained alter age 65.

HISTORY (Assistant Professor)_An individual with training in
any area of history is desired. Responsibilities will include
instruction at the lower level (Early and Late Western
Civilization) and upper level (Ancient, Medieval, African,

A doctorate in the teaching area or a closely related field is
required for all positions (in some cases, ABD will be
considered), except those in fine arts and social work where

8) Position: Senior Research Officer

1. The Refugee Studies Programme (RSP) a unit of Queen Elizabeth
House, the International Development Centre at the University of Oxford,
was established in 1982 for the systematic study of forced migration
throughout the world. RSP provides an interdisciplinary approach to
the study of refugee issues through its teaching and research. The
programme runs a year long programme of seminars, conferences and
workshops, with a four week summer school every July. In addition it
houses a 20,000 item Documentation Centre, edits the Journal of Refugee
Studies, publishes the Refugee Participation Network Newsletter and has
several thriving Visiting Fellowship Programmes. It plays host to a large
number of visitors.
RSP is directed by Dr Barbara Harrell-Bond and has twenty members
of staff including eight support staff.
2. The Inter-Faculty Committee for Queen Elizabeth House intends to
appoint a Senior Research Officer to RSP. The officer is expected to start
on the 1 October 1995 or as soon as possible thereafter.
3. Responsibilities
The appointee will take responsibilities for the academic oversight of the
education unit at RSP, undertake research and participate in developing
research programmes.
The Education Unit is responsible for all the teaching activities of
the RSP which include: the various visiting fellowship programmes, the
Foundation Course, weekly seminars, workshops and other short courses
which are specifically designed for practitioners who work in the field
of forced migration. The Unit is serviced by two support staff and the
Unit coordinator.
The appointee will be expected to guide the nine month Foundation
Course and to teach for at least one term on the course; to take prime
responsibility for one term a year of a weekly seminar to which various
speakers are invited; and help to guide, co-ordinate and contribute to
the teaching of the one month summer school.
With respect to the Foundation Course the appointee would
contribute to: planning the academic content and maintaining the
academic standards of modules offered, and for promotion of the course
within and outside the University; advising on admissions in accordance
with the RSP/QEH affiliation system; evaluating students' performance
and advising on tuition.
The Senior Research Officer might also have the opportunity to
supervise two or three research students.
4. The appointee would be expected to undertake and publish research
in reputable refereed journals, or their equivalent, on issues related to
forced migration, and to participate in the research activities of RSP and
Queen Elizabeth House as a member of a research group.
5. The appointee will be responsible to the Director of the RSP under
the overall guidance of the Director of QEH.
6. The committee is looking for someone with an academic qualification
at doctoral level;
a substantial record of research and teaching in forced migration a
related field, and ability to work in a multidisciplinary, multicultural
environment. The position is open to people from a number of relevant
disciplines including anthropology, sociology, economics, law, politics or
international relations. Previous experience of management in an
academic environment would be desirable.
7. The post is full-time for five years on the academic-related RSII
Grade stlg19,848 - stlg26,430. There are 30 days holiday a year plus the eight
days of Public Holidays and the position carries the opportunity to join
the University Superannuation Scheme.
8. The University has a generous maternity leave scheme, which goes
well beyond the statutory provisions. Provided that they have at least
26 weeks' service with the University by the expected date of birth, or
have at any time been eligible to receive full-rate Statutory Maternity
Pay or were at any stage entitled to the benefits of a previous employer's
paid maternity leave scheme, women are eligible for 18 weeks maternity
leave on full pay, followed by up to 22 weeks unpaid maternity leave.
The University would consider applications from existing female staff
wishing to return to work on a part-time basis after the birth of their
child.

from four months to five years; about half are reserved for nominees of
