I can recommend several things, all of which engaged my students: Lawson's
history of the East India Company is good and in paperback, as is Belich"s work
on the Maori wars:Victorian Interpretation of Racial Conflict. de Schweinitz
Rise and Fall of British India is good for advanced students interested in the
economics of sub-continental imperialism. Pat Barr's Dust in the Balance looks
at women in India. Assigning fiction can be an enjoyable approach: Passage to
India, Heat and Dust, Burmese Days, Kipling's stories. I also have students do
a movie review to see the glamorization of the empire by Hollywood: Man Who
Would Be King, Four Feathers, Lives of a Bengal Lancer, Shakespeare Wallah are
all fun. Hope this helps. A good text might be Lloyd though it's all inclu-
sive geographically and chronologically.
