New and Old Approaches to Beowulf and OE Literature

an NEH Summer Seminar for College Teachers

19 June -- 28 July 1995

The Rawlinson Center for Anglo-Saxon Studies

The Medieval Institute, Western Michigan University

This seminar will focus on Beowulf and will consider the impact of
scholarly trends in the last quarter century on the understanding of that
work. Sepcific study areas in the consideration of old and new approaches
include the idea of philology, orality and literacy, women's studies, and
the context of OE literature. The major primary source will be Beowulf;
other texts include Christian and sercular poems as well as various prose
texts. The basic format will be a blend of seminar sessions and individual
conferences.
Kevin S. Kiernan (Kentucky) and Katherine O'Brien O'Keeffe (Notre
Dame) will offer guest lectures. Images from The Electronic Beowulf Project
will be available for study. The seminar aims to attract teachers from
four-year colleges and community colleges, as well as independent scholars,
from diverse fields. Participants will receive a stipend of $3200.
Participants must be U.S. citizens or have resided in the U.S. since 1992.
