As a person who earns her living with her hands, I was interested to learn
that the notion that such persons as myself are too stupid to understand art
or intellectual endeavor is a tenet of Republican ideology going all the way
back to Jefferson. The prospect of a society ruled by such theory is yet
another wonderful thing to look forward to when all the poor have lap-tops
(I presume lap-tops are within the understanding of us manual types, being
much simpler than art or research?) I would hope that the more serious
question to be raised is how the benefits arising from grants for works of art
or academic research can be communicated and shared with the widest possible
public, whatever their means of livelihood?
